Children can be enrolled from their fifth birthday. Children cannot be enrolled before their fifth birthday, but some familiarisation visits prior to enrollment is strongly recommended. The normal procedure is for visits to be arranged four weeks prior to starting. This normally consists of 1-2 visits for a morning session. Please call the school office on 03 762 5740 to arrange this. A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be left at the school office.
Across Greymouth, schools have been working together to support a smooth and consistent start to school. As part of this, many local schools, including ours, are using a cohort entry approach for new entrants. This means that children typically start school in Week 1 or Week 6 of a term, alongside a small group of peers.
Starting school in a cohort helps children settle in, build relationships, and establish routines together, while allowing teachers to provide a well-supported transition into school life.
If your child is approaching school age, we encourage you to get in touch early so we can discuss likely start dates and plan a positive transition into school.
When the necessary enrollment forms have been completed at the school office, the child will be placed in what is considered to be the correct class level. This will be confirmed when the records from the previous school are received.
You enrol directly with the school or kura. Contact them to find out their enrolment process, and to get their enrolment forms.
Check with the school to see what paperwork they want. They will want things like:
a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport as proof of age
medical information including your doctor’s contact details
any legal documents, for example, custody or access agreements the school should know about
if your child has been enrolled in early childhood education, their National Student Number (NSN), and ECE leaver’s record
contact details: your family phone numbers and address and someone the school or kura can call in an emergency if they can’t get hold of you.
